Some 7 members of Soccsksargen Responsible Miners Association (SRMA) XII led by its President Geronimo L. Sequito, representative of Tribal Mining Corporation visited the Maco Gold Mine of Apex Mining Company, Inc. (AMCI) in Barangay Masara, Maco, Compostela Valley Province on July 25, 2018.

The SRMA members were toured in mining sites, mill plant, tailings management facility, nursery and APEX Village to see the facilities, equipment, programs and rehabilitation strategies.

AMCI is one of the country’s oldest operating gold-silver mine company, which making it as one of the top producers of gold-silver.

The Educational Tour was part of the SRMA’s initiative to strengthen the capability of its members in the implementation of best mining practices, responsible minerals development, exploration and mining projects. It aims to enhance their knowledge on environmental protection management through rehabilitation strategies and sustainable development to its host and neighboring communities.

(Koronadal City) – Some 180 farmers and irrigators from federation of Marbel-2 River Irrigators Association attended a seminar on fundamental of responsible minerals development on August 1, 2018 in Koronadal City. 

In partnership with the National Irrigation Administration–South Cotabato, the event was presented by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XII and the Soccsksargen Responsible Miners Association (SRMA) to promote awareness and understanding of responsible minerals development among the farmers and irrigators in the city.

The seminar also aimed to address misinformation and misconceptions about minerals development.

Geologists and mining engineers from MGB XII gave lectures on geology and mining, benefits of mining, myths and facts about geohazards, and the salient features of the Mining Act of 1995 and its differences from laws governing mining activities in the past.

“We had some bad experience about mining in the past, and this is being addressed by the new mining law. The Philippine Mining Act of 1995 and other related rules, regulations and policies are now in place to help ensure that our negative experiences in mining will not happen again.

In relation to the observance of National Disaster Resilience Month 2018, the Office of the Civil Defense XII (OCD XII) together with the member agencies of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council XII (RDRRMC XII), conducted Mangrove Planting in Brgy. Buayan, General Santos City on July 13, 2018.

Thirty-four (34) MGB XII employees enthusiastically joined the activity and planted Bakawan Trees. The activity was also held as a commitment of the region to the national greening program. The same was participated by different government agencies in the region, as well as some private companies and organizations.

Various DENR agencies, local government units, NGOs, and educational institutions in Region XII gathered together to launch the Mindanao leg of the DENR-led People’s Environment Stewardship Movement-“Tayo Ang Kalikasan” and Sarangani Bay Summit at the SM City Gensan Atrium, General Santos City on June 29-July 1, 2018.

DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu graced the event as the speaker, wherein he emphasized that the protection of the environment is a shared responsibility between the government and the citizens of the country and encouraged everyone from different sectors to actively participate in the campaigns of Tayo ang Kalikasan.

Sec. Cimatu also toured around the different booths set up by the participating agencies boasting their locally sourced products and ongoing projects.

At the MGB XII booth, geologists from the agency showcased different rock and mineral samples found in the region and explained how these can be utilized for daily use at home, in school, office, and in different industries.

DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu paid a visit to Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XII office and unveiled the symbolic new building marker during the inauguration ceremony on June 28, 2018 at the Prime Regional Center, Barangay Carpenter Hill in Koronadal City. Joining him in the symbolic unveiling ceremony were DENR XII Regional Director Nilo B. Tamoria, CESE and Koronadal City Acting Mayor Atty. Eliordo U. Ogena.

In his inaugural speech, Secretary Cimatu congratulated the MGB XII officers and staff for having constructed a building facility on a lot donated by the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Koronadal City. “We are proud of you and consider the building’s completion as your milestone,” Cimatu said.

MGB Acting Director Atty. Wilfredo G. Moncano also applauded the MGB XII headed by Regional Director Engr. Constancio A. Paye, Jr. for working hard to finally complete the whole construction of the building which provides ease and convenience in serving clients and the general public.
