Several equipment on illegal small scale mining were confiscated after the conduct of the joint inspection in Sultan Kudarat on August 3. The inspection done by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XII, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PEMO) of Sultan Kudarat, Philippine National Police (PNP) of Sultan Kudarat and Municipal Environmental and Natural Resources (MENRO) of Bagumbayan in  Brgys. Chua and Sto. Nińo, all situated in the municipality of Bagumbayan turned into the successful apprehension and dismantling of generator engine, compressor engine, engine flywheel, v-belt, pulley and air cooler engine used in illegal small-scale mining and processing operations in the area.

 The Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) appointed Engr. Efren B. Carido as Officer in Charge of the Office of the Regional Director (OIC-ORD) of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XII. By virtue of his special order issued on July 10, 2017, Secretary Roy A. Cimatu appointed Carido to replace Engr. Constancio A. Paye, Jr. who is reassigned at MGB XI, Davao City.

 Carido is a mining engineer by profession. He has extensive background and expertise on mining environment, social and safety concerns. Prior to his appointment, he holds the position of division chief of Mine Environment Safety Development Division now coined in DAO No. 2015-06 as Mine Safety Environment and Social Development Division (MSESDD). 

The Regional Director (RD) of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XII meets the Tri Media Association of General Santos City and South Cotabato, Inc. on July 3 at the MGB XII office. The group headed by Mr. Mario B. Basilio of PuntoNews made a surprise visit that led to the interview on the issues surrounding Sagittarius Mines, Inc. or SMI.
Issues concerning the community and environment were the main points raised by the media. All of which were positively addressed by Constancio A. Paye, Jr., RD of MGB XII by explaining that SMI has a contract with the government called Financial or Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) which was approved in 1995. The contract is for a 25-year period and will expire in 2020 but is subject to another like period upon its renewal. 

As part of the culmination in the celebration of Environment Month, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XII undertook tree planting activity at the municipality of Senator Ninoy Aquino (SNA), Province of Sultan Kudarat. 27 employees headed by Regional Director Constancio A. Paye, Jr. and partners from BMCH, Inc. went to conduct tree planting activity at SNA on July 29. The group paid courtesy visit to Mayor Randy L. Ecija, Jr. before proceeding to the designated site. Varieties of hardwood seedlings such as lawaan and kamagong were planted along Kulaman riverbank to serve as protection or buffer zone. All plants were tagged indicating the name of the planter, date and time planted. Close to a hundred seedlings were planted in the area. According to Vice Mayor Rafael Flauta, III, the trees will be taken cared of by student ecologist to ensure its survival. 
Similarly, tree planting activity was conducted together with the Vice Mayor near Poblacion the following day with the same species of seedlings. Earlier of July 29, MGB XII also participated in the citywide Tree Growing Festival of the City of Koronadal, the area designated was along the national highway of Brgy. Morales.
MGB XII is continuing its greening activities to help with the the goal of the government in the National Greening Program. Outdoor events conducted by the office has a component of tree planting activity as a way to propagate its importance and as contribution to improve ecological and living environment for the people.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XII extended assistance to the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PEMO) to capacitate small-scale mining/quarry inspectors, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources officers (MENROs), deputized barangay officials of South Cotabato in the implementation and enforcement of small-scale mining laws and other related laws.

Dubbed as One-day Training/Re-Orientation on Small-Scale Mining and Quarry Operation and Enforcement of Related Laws, Ordinances and Policies, mining engineers of MGB XII provided the participants with the necessary knowledge and education of small-scale mining laws and its revised rules and regulations. Hernani G. Abdon, Roger M. Tamayo, and Benedict C. Ekwey, division chief of Mine Management and section chiefs of Monitoring and Technical Services and Mine Safety and Health respectively shared their expertise and provided inputs to the local enforcers on the establishment and declaration of Minahang Bayan, method and monitoring of quarrying operations and safety measures in the inspections of tunnels and gold processing plants.

PEMO on the other hand also discussed tips on apprehension, revenue collection and the ordinance of small-scale mining and quarry operations of the province. These were presented by Atty. Marnito Cosep and Ms. Nencita Acain.

MGB XII is continuously been engaging with LGUs to capacitate them with the laws, procedures and processes of small-scale mining and other related laws. The assistance extended on the one-day training conducted at Viajera Dine and Cafe Restaurant, National Highway, Brgy. Morales, City of Koronadal is part of intensification drive to provide information and to strengthen awareness of the local partners on mining laws. Technical assistance on the other hand is also being provided to the local government units in their conduct of monitoring and investigation of complaints.
