The Mines and Geosciences Bureau XII conducted a 1-day training for registered small scale safety inspectors on April 16, 2021 in Barangay Poblacion, T’Boli, South Cotabato.

The training was coordinated with Desawo Integrated Small Scale Miners Association, Inc. (DISSMAI), Maguan Clan Small-Scale Miners Association, Inc. (MCSSMAI), and T’boli Minahang Bayan Multi-Purpose Cooperative (TMBMPC). A total of 19 registered safety inspectors attended the activity. It aimed to provide technical assistance to safety inspectors and equip them with knowledge on safety and health in the workplace.

Engr. Roger M. Tamayo, OIC-Chief Mine Safety, Environment and Social Development Division (MSESDD), discussed the topic on accident investigation. He intricately led the safety inspectors on the procedures in conducting an investigation. Engr. Tamayo also introduced and explained the root cause analysis that may help them understand the root of the problem.

“I urge safety inspectors to tell the truth, be honest as you are accountable with the situation. If you hide something, this thing will be dug up during the investigation. So always be honest. And report what really happened” Engr. Tamayo said during his lecture.

Engr. Kier Q. Castillanes, Senior SRS of MSESDD, presented a refresher on Small-Scale Mine Safety Rules and Regulations under DENR Administrative Order No. 1997-30. He also emphasized the “Zero Accident” objective of the SSM Safety Rules and Regulations. Engr. Castillanes proceeded in tackling Accident Prevention on Unsafe Acts and Conditions. He demonstrated his lecture through drawings wherein safety inspectors actively engaged in.

During the open forum, safety inspectors were given tasks in identifying unsafe acts and unsafe conditions that they may encounter in the area. An Emergency Preparedness and Response topic was also presented by Engr. Castillanes. He tackled the 3 priorites during emergencies and communication requirements essential for the safety inspectors to know.

Lastly, MGB XII encouraged small-scale safety inspectors in Region XII to report any unsafe acts, encourage co-workers to work safely, inspect the area from time to time, inform one’s health status, be alert, and always be honest in reporting an incident.
