MGB XII Supervising Geologist Ariel Austin A. Acosta reported the identified landslide prone areas and flood prone areas in Region XII during a live radio broadcast interview with Bryan Belotindos of Bombo Radyo Koronadal on January 18, 2020.
Landslide prone areas in Region XII that may be adversely affected due to the rainy season include T’Boli and Lake Sebu of South Cotabato; Glan, Malapatan and Maitum in Sarangani Province; Kalamansig, Lebak, Palimbang and Bagumbayan in Sultan Kudarat; and Libungan and mountainous areas of Magpet, Arakan and Matalam in Cotabato Province.
Flood prone areas could occur near the Allah Valley River, Banga River, Pulangi River and their floodplains and Liguasan Marsh. Floodplain in Banga, Norala and nearby communities in B’lok Creek of Koronadal in South Cotabato are susceptible to flood brought by overflowing of the creeks/rivers.
Coastal flooding may occur in coastal communities of Cotabato City, Lebak, Kalamansig, Palimbang, Maitum, Kiamba, Maasim, General Santos City, Alabel, Malapatan and Glan which can be supplemented by strong waves brough by strong winds.
Acosta encouraged the concerned communities to be vigilant and follow instructions of the Local Government Units (LGUs), Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (LDRRMC), and the Local Planning and Development Office. He said that a relocation site must always be prepared and the information dissemination on hazard prone areas must also be relayed to the sitio and purok levels. He urged the community to notify the barangay and LDRRMC if there are developing landslides near their areas.
MGB XII had already provided the geohazard maps to LGUs in Region XII. These maps determined areas susceptible to rain-induced landslides and flooding and helps identify safe areas for relocation/evacuation.
MGB XII is a recommendatory body and it is still up to the LGUs if they will implement the recommendations based on the geohazard maps for their disaster preparedness and management planning. MGB XII helps in mitigating destructive effects and impacts of natural hazards through technical assistance and recommendations for relocation and/or preventive evacuation in coordination with the LGUs.
